Testing is required as a benchmark at the end of grades 3, 5, 8, and 10 by August 15 [OAR 581-021-0026(5)]. If a student has never attended public/private school, the first test will be after grade 3 by August 15. After being withdrawn from public/private school, students are given an 18-month testing reprieve; after 18 months, the first test occurs at the next benchmark year. You can test your student at any time—you do not need to wait for benchmark grades. If a student is enrolled in homeschool for less than one academic year and re-enrolls in public/private school, testing is not required.
Can I opt out of testing?
No. Because ODE gives parents/guardians complete autonomy over what they teach their homeschool students, testing at benchmark grades ensures students have learned basic concepts and skills taught to their peers in public/private school.
Who can test my student, and what do I do with the results?
ODE maintains an updated list of approved testers. Approved testers are qualified to administer the test and are a “neutral” third party who is not related to the student or family by blood or marriage. Parents/guardians contact the tester directly to arrange and pay for testing. Keep the results for your records and submit them if Lane ESD requests them.
What tests are approved, and what subjects will my student be tested on?
ODE keeps a list of approved tests at this link. The subjects tested are reading, math, and language arts. Keep the results for your records and submit them to the ESD if the ESD requests them.
Is free testing available?
There is no free testing that Lane ESD is aware of. “All costs for the test instrument, administration, and scoring are the responsibility of the parent” [OAR 581-021-0026(10)]. If you find free testing by an approved tester, please email Lane ESD with the details at homeschool@lesd.k12.or.us.
