Lane ESD Social Emotional Learning Team Statement

Our team works to help districts center their SEL work on wellness, equity, and belonging. We do so in partnership with the Collaborative for Academic and Social Emotional Learning (CASEL) and other individuals and organizations which can help advance our work with communities throughout Lane County. As you will find below, our work can assist you in carrying out your Student Investment Act goals and outcomes.

CASEL SEL Definition

We work from the Collaborative for Academic Social and Emotional Learning’s (CASEL) definition of SEL. CASEL defines SEL as follows:

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is an integral part of education and human development. SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.

Ways that we can support SEL work in your district

We are available to support SEL work in your district in response to your vision, current practices, and capacities. We believe it is critical that we work to understand district SEL awareness, vision, priorities, and capacity as we endeavor to support you. We do not work as a “one size fits all” operation. Some possible ways we can support you are as follows:

  • Partnering to Build SEL Literacy Across Your District (for example: creating a vision and mission statement, professional development to build awareness, creating community awareness and seeking buy-in)
  • Partnering to Find and/or Evaluate SEL Materials (for example: Zones of Regulation, Harmony SEL, Pure Edge, Sources of Strength, etc.)
  • Support Staff Training with SEL Materials and Practices (for example: Brain Breaks, Regulation Spaces, integrating SEL and Academics, Circles, Sources of Strength, etc.)
  • Partnering to Integrate SEL with other District Initiatives (for example: MTSS, equity work, curriculum, PLCs, etc.)
  • Facilitating Communities of Social Emotional Learning Practice (for example: stipended learning opportunities for school staff to maintain continuous professional development)
  • Partnering & Facilitating SEL Professional Development (these can be offered as single sessions or a series that lasts one or more years)
  • Systemic SEL Integration (this includes SEL reflections, inventories, tools, support, coaching, consultation, staff development, PD sessions, student materials, data collection and evaluation, and continuous improvement)
