The Martin Luther King, Jr. Education Center is a partnership between Lane ESD and Lane County Department of Youth Services, serving secondary students with an active case with the Department of Juvenile Justice. Students are referred to the program by a juvenile counselor, usually when the student has experienced multiple interruptions in other traditional or alternative schools.

Students focus on improving academic skills, usually while earning high school credit or working towards obtaining a General Equivalency Diploma (GED). The school also provides behavior support instruction and links students to wrap-around services such as counseling and drug and alcohol treatment.

In addition to academics, students receive vocational training and are taught job readiness skills. Through our many partnerships, the school provides work experience opportunities that can eventually lead to a paid stipend for the student.

Current capacity for the school is generally around 45 students. By having smaller class sizes and increasing the student to staff ratio, we are able to provide more intensive and individualized services to students. Our efforts have shown dramatic increased in academic scores and have reduced recidivism by up to 70%.
